CLAY WORKSHOPS

Clay enhances our emotional understanding of the world.

Clay is malleable and bends to our whims and temper, but it also has a life of its own if we choose to listen. The technical skills we learn in the clay workshops can be brought into our lives, enhancing how we choose to live.

HANDBUILDING (BEGINNER)

  • 2 - 3 hours | 8-25 participants | sliding scale $40-$90 per person (+ travel time)

    please note: organizations & institutions are expect to pay $75+ per person

    Pinch pots are an ancient and fundamental foundation in learning the craft of pottery. Consistent pressure and methodical movements are the crux of this technique. We will work on this meditative practice together.

    All materials provided. Participants will get 2-5 lbs of clay to make their own pieces. Please leave 3-6 weeks after the workshop to receive finished glazed pieces. All pieces will be finished with a food safe clear glaze. This workshop can be booked in conjunction with a Surface Texture and Color Exploration Workshop (budget two days).

  • 3 - 4 hours | 8-15 participants | sliding scale $50-$100 per person (+ travel time)

    Slabs often feel like a work of mathematics. They require planning, measuring, and adjusting your methods to fit the surface texture you want to use. The beauty of slabs is that they are replicable.You will walk away with customized stencil(s), if you choose to make your own, and be able to recreate your piece whenever you want!

    All materials provided. Stencils, molds, stamps, and textured rollers will be available for participants to explore with. Participants will get 4-7 lbs of clay to make their piece(s). Participants are encouraged to bring a(n organic) texture that is meaningful to them. Additionally, participants can choose to finish their piece with an oxide wash to enhance the texture on their pieces. Please leave 3-6 weeks after the workshop to receive finished glazed pieces. All pieces will be finished with a food safe clear glaze.

  • 3 - 4 hours | 8-15 participants | sliding scale $30-$100 per person (+ travel time)

    please note: organizations & institutions are expect to pay $80+ per person

    Coils are strength enhancing structures if the technique is applied correctly. You will be challenged to build larger pieces with this technique.

    All materials provided. Participants will get 5-10 lbs of clay to make their piece(s). Additionally, participants can choose to finish their piece with an oxide wash to enhance the texture on their pieces. Please leave 3-6 weeks after the workshop to receive finished glazed pieces. All pieces will be finished with a food safe clear glaze. This workshop can be adjusted for multiple days (rate will vary).

HANDBUILDING (INTERMEDIATE)

  • 2 - 4 hours | 8-12 participants | sliding scale $40-$90 per person (+ travel time)

    Having an animal that is your positive obsession? Come explore its structure and shape. You will be able to construct one or a whole pack, while employing all handbuilding knowledge and techniques. Participants are encouraged to come in with ideas about which animals they would like to recreate in clay form.

    All materials provided. Participants will get 2-6 lbs of clay to make their piece(s). Additionally, participants can choose to finish their piece with an oxide wash to enhance the animal texture. Please leave 3-6 weeks after the workshop to receive finished glazed pieces. All pieces will be finished with a food safe clear glaze. This workshop can be booked in conjunction with a Surface Texture and Color Exploration Workshop (budget two days).

  • 1 - 3 hours | 8-12 participants | sliding scale $60-$90 per person (+ travel time)

    Light casting and shadow shaping is a magical practice. You will be shaping your own luminaries with different cutter tools.

    All materials provided. Participants will receive a premade cylinder and 2-6 lbs of clay to finish their piece(s). Additionally, participants can choose to finish their piece with an oxide wash to enhance the texture on their pieces. Please leave 2-4 weeks after the workshop to receive finished glazed pieces. All pieces will be finished with a food safe clear glaze. This workshop can be booked in conjunction with a Surface Texture and Color Exploration Workshop (budget two days).

SURFACE TEXTURE + COLOR EXPLORATION

  • 2 - 3 hours | 8-25 participants | sliding scale $40-$90 per premade item + $400-$800 workshop materials & firing fee (+ travel time)

    Participants will be choosing from premade clay pieces (mugs, pots, tumblers, or bowls) and exploring a wide variety of underglaze colors and application techniques (including: painting, sgraffito, inlaying, trailing, silkscreen transferring, etc.)

    All materials provided. Participants are encouraged to bring images they love as reference materials. Please leave 2-4 after the workshop to receive finished glazed pieces. All pieces will be finished with a food safe clear glaze.

  • 1-3 hours | 8-20 participants | sliding scale $30-$90 per premade item + $400-$800 workshop materials & firing fee (+ travel time)

    Participants will be choosing from premade clay pieces (mugs, pots, tumblers, or bowls). Participants will learn how to pull their own un underglaze transfers and apply them onto clay piece(s).

    All materials provided. Please leave 2-4 after the workshop to receive finished glazed pieces. All pieces will be finished with a food safe clear glaze.
